There are two things you should know prior to watching this movie. First, it is all about the world of LARPing, or Live Action Role Playing, and second, it is not a spoof or making fun of said activity. If you get your kicks laughing at nerds having fun with other nerds, don’t even bother watching this. Many of the most recognizable actors, like Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Summer Glau (Firefly) are already known for their roles in science fiction and fantasy, so it was really fun to see them playing a version of the genre that anyone can participate in. Steve Zahn’s wizard character bought a spell book on Ebay and proceeds to read from it during the game. Unfortunately, it was a real spell book and he summoned up a creature from hell that proceeds to wreak havoc on the LARPers, who initially think it’s part of the game until blood starts flying. Upon learning he raised an actual demon, he says, “Er, sorry.” A hilarious cast of characters and an interesting window into a type of activity that while it is often scoffed at, actually looks like a lot of fun. Is it a masterpiece of film? No, but it was definitely entertaining and I greatly enjoyed it. A cult classic you’re either going to love or wonder why anyone would think it was funny. Who thought this was a good idea?
Some other LARPers
She doesn’t look so much like a demon …
Relax, Joe. I’ve got this. (Summer Glau as Gwen)
Steve Zahn as a justifiably worried Eric.
Huh, it’s never done that before …
How do you fix magic gone awry? More hocus-pocus.
I’ll bet now Cersei would be nice to you.
